New Orleans Tree Facts

Bald Cypress
A deciduous (loses leaves in winter) tree. Reaches a height of 50 to 60 feet when fully mature, with a 25 to 30 foot spread. Often laden with Spanish moss creating a romantic image of the South.

Wood also used by Cajuns to make a canoe-like boat called a pirogue. Also used by Louisianašs Choctaw-Houma Indian Tribe for the same purpose.

Canaert Red Cedar
Evergreen that reaches a height of 30 feet when mature, with a 15-foot spread.

At one time, the Canaert Red Cedar was a popular Christmas Tree choice.

Legend has it that Louisianašs state capitol, Baton Rouge (Red Stick), was named from the redwood of this tree.

Crape Myrtle
Deciduous tree that reaches 25-30 feet tall with a 12-15 foot spread.

Known as the "lilac of the South."

Blooms numerous times in Spring and Summer.

Southern Magnolia
Deciduous tree that reaches 40-45 feet all with a 25-30 foot spread.

Large fragrant flowers that make beautiful floral displays.

Southern Live Oak
Popular evergreen tree that reaches height of 50-60 feet when mature, with an 80- 90 foot spread.

Famous Live Oaks in the South that are hundreds of years old include the Evangeline Oak, the Seven Sisters Oak, and the "Rosedown." Many of these majestic specimens are found near or around historic plantations.

Hundreds of duels were fought under Southern Live Oaks dating back to the late 1700s. While duels were outlawed in the mid-1800s, dozens of men carried on the tradition until the late 1800s.
